RC How To:

HPI Savage Light-Weight Idler Gears (2)

I looked online for a replacement and noticed that HPI had a light weight option for these gears made from steel.

They didn't say heavy duty like the gears I installed for the upper part of the transmission, but they were hardened steel, so I figured I'd check them out.

They are recommended as an upgrade by HPI, but I am not sure if that is just because they are lighter. If they hold up, the extra acceleration would be great.

When they came in they were much smaller than I thought they would be. I guess that's why they are light weight, but I am a little worried about them holding up to brushless power. But HPI does recommend them for the Flux. They were a lot more expensive than the stock ones, so I am hoping for the best.

Installed:

HPI 86275 idler top shaft HPI 86274 idler bottom shaft

I noticed some slop in the upper idler shaft which may not be a big deal with the wider gears, but I wanted to make sure these teeth lined up. A glow-plug's copper ring was a perfect shim for this job and I have a bunch lying around now not needed.

Put it all back together, and that completes my +$100 transmission. I'll update this post with the results if they fail or not with the brushless setup.
